Turning Space

Уважаемые друзья и коллеги!

Приглашаем 16 декабря в 18.18 на семинар Лаборатории исследований компьютерных игр (ЛИКИ), на котором состоится дискуссия на тему «Turning Space», докладчик: Dr. Michael Nitsche (Georgia Institute of Technology).

Abstract. We have based our approaches to space on human centered models and while those remain useful for many conditions, this talk will ask whether we can turn it away from this center by applying arguments from New Materialism. Can we re-envision digital spaces through the ideas of material performance? Leaning on concepts from Barad, Bennett, and Bell, this presentation will try to reach into the idea of digital game worlds as performance spaces and the shifting roles of humans and objects within them.

Michael Nitsche works as Associate Professor at the School of Literature, Media & Communication (LMC) at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he teaches courses for the Digital Media M.S. and Ph.D. program, as well as for the Computational Media undergraduate program. He founded the Digital World & Image Group (DWIG), which is the home for his ongoing practice-based research projects. He is associated faculty to the Graphics & Visualization Unit (GVU) and member of the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology (GTCMT).

His research aims to combine performance and craft to design new form of digital media and interaction design. The results can be virtual as much as physical, but their goal has to be to further our creative engagement.

Nitsche published his first book Video Game Spaces: Image, Play, and Structure in 3D Worlds, published in spring 2009 with The MIT Press and co-edited The Machinima Reader (with Henry Lowood, spring 2011, MIT Press). He currently is co-editor of the Routledge/Taylor & Francis journal Digital Creativity and has a forthcoming book Vital Media with MIT Press.

His work has received support from the NSF, NEH, as well as from companies including Alcatel-Lucent, Google, and Turner Broadcasting. Michael holds a Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of Cambridge (Darwin College). He lives with his wife and three children in Atlanta, GA.
